A useful plugin solves today’s problem. A thoughtfully extensible plugin also gives future changes a clear place to belong. That can reduce the temptation to edit core plugin files whenever a site needs a slightly different behavior.
Separate responsibilities
Keep data handling, permissions, presentation, and integrations organized rather than mixing them into one large function. Document the assumptions behind important operations. Clear boundaries make it easier to understand where an extension belongs and what it should not change.
Expose deliberate extension points
Use WordPress actions for events and filters for values where an extension point serves a real use case. Name hooks consistently, document their parameters, and keep behavior predictable. Not every line needs a hook. A small, stable public surface is easier for others to use than a large, undocumented one.
Keep security in the main path
Extensions should not bypass capability checks, nonce verification where applicable, validation, or output escaping. Plan how stored data and public hooks evolve between versions. Test meaningful integration behavior and failure cases rather than assuming a successful activation proves the extension contract works.
Your next steps
- Identify actual extension needs before adding hooks.
- Document hook names, parameters, and expectations.
- Keep permissions and validation enforced.
- Test compatibility when changing public behavior.
